The Dell UltraSharp 1707FP is a 17-inch LCD monitor provides outstanding image quality. It has a pivoting screen and all the adjustability you need, along with an audio input and four USB ports.
The UltraSharp 1707FP has a somewhat futuristic design with a two-tone black and silver color scheme that looks great. It tilts 5 degrees forward and 20 degrees back. It pivots between landscape and portrait mode with ease and can swivel 45 degrees to the right or left.
It provides 5 inches of height adjustment, which may be the best available on an LCD monitor. However, it is top heavy and tends to wobble even when small adjustments are made, though it is unlikely to flip over.
The UltraSharp 1707FP has ports for DVI-D, audio and VGA, at the back. It also has one upstream and two downstream USB 2.0 ports. There are two more downstream USB ports on the left side. Such a wide range of connections is rarely found on a 17-inch LCD monitor.
The panel can be easily removed with a quick release button, for mounting on an arm mount or wall. However, built-in speakers are not provided and neither is a headphone jack. A Dell sound bar attachment is available for $29.
There are four small buttons on the front bezel that can be used to switch the monitor on or off, open the onscreen menu (OSM), change between digital and analog inputs and navigate up and down within the onscreen menu. The onscreen menu is easy to use, but there are no dedicated buttons for adjusting contrast and brightness.
At its 1,280 x 1,024 native resolution, the UltraSharp 1707FP delivers outstanding performance with vivid colors all through the spectrum. There is just a little bit of compression at the darker end of the range. Text is easy to read and the grayscales progress quite evenly, but slight brown, blue, pink and green tints are visible.
The UltraSharp 1707FP has a fast 8-millisecond pixel-response rate. The DVD playback is better than average and there is less background noise than is usually visible on LCD monitors. Gaming performance is remarkable with vivid colors and no image irregularities are evident.
The UltraSharp 1707FP comes with a standard three-year warranty that can be extended to four years for $29 and to five years for $49. Toll-free technical service is available around the clock and the Dell website provides downloadable user guides, troubleshooting tips, e-mail product support, and a customer-to-customer discussion forum.
The Dell UltraSharp 1707FP offers plenty of adjustability, a good-looking design, outstanding image quality and an attractive price – a combination that makes it one of the best 17-inch LCD monitors.
